About Allergy Partners

A Network Built Specifically for You

Allergy Partners was created to do one thing: to bring the highest level of care and clinical expertise to as many people as possible living with allergies, asthma and other allergic disease. After over 45 years, and after caring for hundreds of thousands of patients, our focus remains the same.

“You’re really getting 150 allergists, not just one.”

Stephen Shield, MD,
Chairman of the Clinical Governance Board

What began as a community practice in Asheville, North Carolina, has grown to become the nation’s largest and most trusted allergy and asthma practice comprising 140 of the best allergists and immunologists in the country. Each provider in our network understands the importance of working together to solve any complex problem brought on by asthma and allergies. This shared knowledge enables us to bring world-class medicine and leading-edge practices to communities across the country.

  • An evidence-based and standardized allergy immunotherapy program, developed by our physicians and delivered through our centralized allergen extract lab.
  • A robust clinical research program to provide real world insights into the conditions we treat and provide patients with access to emerging treatments
  • A comprehensive program for the diagnosis and management of food allergies.
  • A centralized program to improve access to biologics and other advanced medications for the treatment of severe asthma, hives, eczema, and other allergic diseases.

Each program was built to empower you to live without allergies and asthma discomfort.

Our Story is Just Beginning

Born and raised outside of Baltimore, I have called North Carolina home since completing medical school. After my pediatrics training at Duke, I practiced general pediatrics for three years in Hendersonville.  During this time, I realized that my passion lies in the treatment of allergies and asthma. After a brief sojourn in Augusta, Georgia for allergy and immunology training, my family and I returned to Western North Carolina and I joined Allergy Partners.

Since then, my interest in allergy and asthma care has continued to grow. From a scientific standpoint, the field is ever changing and intellectually rewarding. From a personal standpoint, I find working with patients and families both satisfying and fun.

I strive to provide each patient with a comprehensive and personalized evaluation and treatment plan that not only treats his or her condition but fits with his or her lifestyle. I firmly believe that we should work together to control allergic diseases and asthma and not let them control you.

I have particular interest in working with patients, both adult and pediatric, suffering from allergies, asthma, eczema, and chronic sinusitis. In addition to my work with patients, I also serve as Chief Executive Officer for Allergy Partners. In this role, I strive to improve systems of care to ensure that all our patients and their families receive the very best care.

Dr. Shield grew up in Newport News with severe asthma. His experiences with the wonderful doctors and nurses who took great care of him during those difficult times stimulated his interest in medicine, so it was only natural that he chose a career in Allergy and Immunology.

He feels fortunate to have trained with some of the most outstanding allergists in the country. That training, combined with his own personal experiences, gives him the ability to provide a level of care that is difficult to find elsewhere. He is honored to have been named by his peers as a Hampton Roads “Top Doc” in Allergy and Immunology on numerous occasions.

He has been happily married to his wife, Kathy, since 1988. They have four really cool, interesting children, all of whom have allergies! He loves spending time with his family and enjoys the challenge of playing a decent round of golf every once in a while.

Dr. Mozena moved to Fredericksburg in 2007 after finishing five years of post-medical school training at the University of Virgina. Although originally from Iowa, the temperate weather, proximity to mountains/beach and friendly people kept his family in Virginia.

Dr. Mozena went into the field of Allergy/Immunology because he was always fascinated with the immune system. He finds disturbances in the delicate balance between our immune system and our environment and the variety of medical conditions they cause both intellectually challenging and rewarding to treat.

The ability to evaluate and treat patients of all ages further attracted him to the field of Allergy/Immunology.

I initially moved to North Carolina to attend medical school at The University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. After completing my allergy training at the University of Wisconsin and practicing back in my home state of Pennsylvania for 5 years, my family and I were excited to move back to North Carolina in 2009.

My interest in treating allergies and asthma stems from my personal experience as a patient. I have experienced firsthand the great improvement in quality-of-life patients have with proper treatment of their allergies and asthma. I believe that patient education and involving patients in making decisions are key components of medical care. By listening to patients and families, I work with them to develop an individualized treatment plan.

I care for patients of all ages for a range of allergic diseases and have particular interest in asthma, allergies, sinusitis and bee sting allergy. Outside of work, I enjoy mountain biking and hiking with my wife, who is a local family doctor, and our 3 children.

“I became fascinated with allergy and immunology early in my medical training.  The study of how the body responds and adapts to the world around it is truly an amazing thing. Sometimes, this causes problems when something that should be safe, like a food, drug, or pollen causes an unwanted reaction.
